Safety Around Water:  A Successful Collaboration!

Safety Around Water:  A Successful Collaboration between the YMCA, Westmoreland County School District and the GH-CP Association

We had so much fun!  The Association made our wonderfully renovated pool and our talented and fun-loving volunteers available for two weeks in June to help the YMCA and the Westmoreland County School District teach 94 second grade students how to swim!

With a total second grade population of 104, we hosted 94 students for a two-week Safety around Water program teaching beginners to swim and be safe around the water and to hone the skills of those who already know something about fun and safety around the water.  The Association provided volunteers to help the YMCA’s instructors deliver this safety program.  Many thanks to our volunteers: Mardie Amery, Kathy Craig, Jocelyn Davis, Kathy Gold, Andrea Hall, Fred Selby, Dot Spencer, and Dawn Wharton. Students were able to enjoy very customized teaching with each of our volunteers working with a few students.  This very personal attention helped each second grader to accomplish as much as possible in two weeks!

All of our learners made awesome progress and completed the Safety around Water program with flying colors.  We look forward to collaborating again next year with the YMCA and the school district on this very important and fun program.
