Dept. of Health Shellfish Surveillance Program

The Virginia Department of Health, Division of Shellfish Safety, works to protect shellfish consumers through water quality monitoring, growing area assessment, education, and regulatory programs.  The Division of Shellfish Safety collects water samples in shellfish growing areas around our community.  This is a surveillance program that is done periodically (6-8 times per year) in various shellfish growing areas.  The GHCP Association Board has approved VDH’s request to use the boat ramp on Osprey Drive in Glebe Harbor to launch vessels that are used for collection of samples in waterways near our community.  VDH advised us they would be conducting sampling in or near our community waters  April 12 – 13.  The surveillance sampling program collects samples that are later analyzed and form a profile about water conditions in shellfish growing areas.
