We really need some volunteer help at the pool!
We expect to start at 9 am this Thursday, October 29, and could use whatever help you can offer during the day. Even an hour of your time would be a big help.
There are two major tasks:
- One task is to store the pool furniture, equipment, and the vending machine for the winter. With 6 to 8 people, that takes less than 3 hours.
- The other task is a bigger job. The sand in our five pool filters needs to be replaced every 5 to 7 years. In the past, we were able to hire people to do this for less than $3,000. Last time, three men did the job in 10 hours. The only bid this year was almost $13,000.
The process itself is straight forward: Drain the filter tanks, use a shop vac to remove the old sand, replace any damaged parts, refill the filter with new sand.
- Mike and I drained the filters, removed the lids, and tested our ability to vac out the sand.
- We have ordered 2700 pounds of sand and expect delivery next week.
- A community volunteer has offered to round up and lead a group of 3 local resident teenagers (paid) to help extract and move the sand out of the pump room.
- We need volunteers to assist with the vacuuming and extraction.
- We plan to spread the old sand on the gravel roadway around the trailer parking and in low and/or muddy areas. We will have a front-end loader and/or a garden tractor with a dump cart to move the sand.
- If we have time and energy, we will start the refill.
Thanks in advance for your support; hope to see you on Thursday!
