Yesterday afternoon, August 3, a resident discovered an apparent leak in the sewer line at the intersection of Sandpiper Lane and Pelican Way, and noted effluent flowing through ditches, across her property, and ultimately into Cabin Point Creek. Crews responded to make repairs as well as clean and treat the affected land area. Those repairs are now complete.
A report of the incident was sent to the County and to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) as well as the Department of Public Health in Richmond. We now await inspection of the area by DEQ to determine next steps. We will be informed if either DEQ or the Health Department has any further recommendations.
Until that time, you are advised to keep pets out of the immediate area affected. If you have concerns, you may wish to refrain from swimming, fishing, or crabbing in the creek out of an abundance of caution.
The findings of DEQ’s review and any further recommendations will be available on our website once we receive them.
