Our remediation process is progressing. We have continued brushing and pressure washing the discolored areas on the pool bottom. Our test results show consistently high chlorine levels that can control bacteria and kill algae.
We are working with a pool company (Turners) in Fredericksburg. Their feedback today is based on their assessment of the water samples we delivered to them yesterday. THEY DO NOT BELIEVE WE HAVE A BLACK ALGAE PROBLEM. They believe the black splotches in the pool are primarily stains resulting from some metal or metallic compounds that have been present on the surface for some time. In any event, it appears there is no contamination-related health risk to using the pool. Chlorine levels have been high enough for long enough to control any algae and bacteria that might have been present.
Our focus now is on reducing the high chlorine levels and balancing other chemical levels to make swimming safe and comfortable again. But right now, the chlorine levels are too high for swimming. We have shut down our chlorinators and are taking other steps to reduce chlorine levels. The pool will open as soon as chlorine levels permit. We also intend to complete the removal of “black stuff” as much as possible.
No promises, but the pool might be reopened on Saturday. Look for updates on gh-cp.org , Facebook, and in Happenings, and for more details about plans and contingencies for Howl at the Moon on Saturday.
