Pool Update  6-10-25

On Saturday, the Board closed the pool temporarily to investigate the possibility that the black stains on the sides and bottom were signs of a “black algae” problem. Water samples were delivered to Mid Atlantic Labs in Port Royal yesterday, but results will not be available until next week and their test may not detect this type of algae. However, the remediation process for this problem is well known, and we will continue the process.  We began brushing and increased chlorination over the weekend. Today, we will be using as many as 5 pressure washers to dislodge algae on the sides and bottom of the pool to make it more susceptible to chlorine shock and fungicides which will also be added today, followed by clarifiers, which will help the filtration system deal with the debris. By the end of the week, I am hopeful that we will have remediated the algae problem, clarified the water, and returned chlorine levels to normal. The algae itself is not toxic, but it can host undesirable bacteria. But controlling bacteria is what chlorine  does. We will keep you posted.

Hopefully yours,

Bill Spencer,                                                                                                                                                      Acting Director for Facilities                                                                                                                              On Behalf of the Board
