What’s Happening with the 5 A Series?

On March 13th, the 5A Series (Authors, Artists, Artisans, Adventurers and Athletes) hosted Linda Ball, a Glebe Harbor resident who is both a quilter and Master Gardener. Linda presented a variety of beautiful quilts dating from the pre-Civil War era to today. It was amazing to see, over time, how little has changed in both the construction and material used.  In addition to answering questions on the history of quilts, she also spoke about quilting groups and their tradition of making quilts for those in need. This sparked interest in continuing a GHCPA sponsored group that has made blankets and quilts for use by the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office, so stay tuned for more on that activity.  And, she showed us a Quilt of Valor, which is a quilt madeby volunteer quilters for veterans who have served on the battlefield.

Linda then spoke of her interest in gardening which led her to obtain certification as a Master Gardener through the Cooperative Extension Service. She provided much useful information about the extension service and the assistance it provides to local residents. For more information, visit them at the A.T. Johnson Human Services Building, 18849 Kings Hwy, Montross, VA 22520, phone: (804) 493-8924 or online at:  https://westmoreland.ext.vt.edu/
